Topic: For girls only-Cervical Screening

Yuk Yuk Yuk Yuk default/sad

I have just found a letter addressed to me and it's telling me to make an appointment for this- yuk. I'm panicking now, it's as I'm coming up to the ripe old age of 25. What do you ladies think, do you think you should go to these, well I know you should but oh my word, Scary default/neutral

Sorry if putting this on here offends anyone but it is a girls room and I'm sat here panicking over it.

Re: For girls only-Cervical Screening

It's probably uncomfortable the first couple of times but then after that you just get used to it I'm sure default/smile

it's all to make sure that you are healthy and that your offspring will be too so when you go keep that in your mind. Plus they are usually all female and understand the embarrassment so they get it done quickly.

Don't worry Hun it will be ok. Just imagine it's the dentist, just a mundane, routine checkup default/smile

2 wheels - PAH, 3 wheels - PAH; Try 8 wheels and 2 feet!! Yeah!

Re: For girls only-Cervical Screening

Lisa you must go,do not put it off,it will be a nurse and they are really nice and will put you at ease. It will be over in a couple of mins and you will wonder what you were worried about. Its very important that you keep that apt. Dont put it off  default/neutral

Re: For girls only-Cervical Screening

Lisa please go.  It is not as bad as it seems.  It could be a life saver.

Re: For girls only-Cervical Screening

It is as simple as a quick swipe with an ice-cream stick Lisa default/smile

Nothing at all to be embarrassed about when you consider the benefits

Invitation for cervical screening

You will receive a letter from your local Primary Care Trust or GP
asking you to make an appointment for screening. You can choose
whether to have it done at your GP practice or family planning clinic.
Most women choose to have the test done by their GP or practice nurse.
You can ask to have yours taken by a female doctor or nurse if you prefer.

Taking a sample

The sample taker should explain the procedure and you should feel
able to ask any questions at any time. The doctor or nurse uses an
instrument called a speculum to open up the vagina and then a spatula
is used to "sweep" around the cervix (neck of the womb) and take a
sample of cells from its surface. Most women consider the procedure
to be only mildly uncomfortable.

Re: For girls only-Cervical Screening

I've just got my letter as well, and will be making my appointment on Monday.
Lisa, it is really important that you go, but HONESTLY it's not bad.

I can put my hand on my heart and say that I would rather have 10 smears rather than one trip to the dentist.
I'd even rather have a smear than go to the hairdresser!

Possibly TMI coming up:

It's much, much, much better if you can relax.  If you tense up 'down there' it will be more uncomfortable.  I know that's easier said than done, but it really will help.
When they do the sweep with the lolly stick, it feels odd - I don't think it's painful at all, but it's a very strange sensation.  So don't be surprised.
If you want, take two ibuprofen about an hour before you go. (As long as you're not allergic etc etc).
Don't book it around your period.  If the cells are 'contaminated' they'll just call you back and you'll have to have it done again.  Mid cycle is a good time.

It's really not too bad, so please go for it. default/smile

Re: For girls only-Cervical Screening

Thanks everyone for your comments, must admit I'm still not keen, something I'm not looking forward to having to do.

Re: For girls only-Cervical Screening

You must go Lisa, i had to start having mine from a young age, and unfortunately for me i had to have it done every 3 months up until recently, i do not enjoy it, but i know that it has to be done, and that it can save my life. i quite often took my mum with me, she used to calm me down somehow, i also felt embarrassed but i shouldnt because what you have to remember is that the nurse sees 100s of ladies, and to her you are no different from anybody else...

Re: For girls only-Cervical Screening

When I was still having to have these tests, Lisa, the nurse told me the first time I went, to "leave your modesty at the door--you can pick it up again on the way out."  if you can manage to do that, the rest is a walk in the park. Mind you, we had a doctor (male) who I worked for and knew personally. Now you won't have that problem--think how lucky you are. default/lol

Re: For girls only-Cervical Screening

Just on a general point (ie anyone here) but I'm pretty sure I'm right in saying that unless a woman is sexually active there is no real point in having cervical screening?
