Coins of the realm, a local shop keeper had refused to except a foriegn pound coin today from a child and the father came in to complain, i was paying a bill and the shopkeeper thinking he wanted a single item went to serve him first so i stood side as the man held out two coins and asked what was wrong with his money and was she racist.

She took one coin and said it was ok but the other was from the Isle of Man and not legal tender in britain, she had a notice behind her listing 6 countries all bearing the queens head but not accepted in the shop, the father said it was all legal and she had made the list up herself which then led to an arguement, the little boy was upset who stood in the doorway as accusations followed.

Afterwards the owner showed me her till that had a draw half full of coins that were all non legal, we went through each in turn, starting with £1, 50p, 20p, 10p and all looked correct, the right shape size and colour, and all had the QE11, date and correct value on them, copper coins were examined.
The countries are the Channel islands, Gibralter, Eire, IOM and a few more that escape me...

I am often confused by the designs on our coins today, they all look odd to me, you can have many different stamps on the coins coins all for the same value and rarely check them, when i got home i checked all my change in my pocket and found a 20p peice from the Bailiwick of Guernsey that was not legal tender. I was surprised to be told scotish money was legal, also that of northern ireland which i normally reject if i am ever given it in change if i dont intend to spend it before returning home.

i have a cup full of spanish, french, german, belgium, austrian and dutch coins kept as souveneirs from holidays before they had the euro- do they have different coins today? anyway, i said just put them in ticket machines and get rid of them as its a mistake not fraud but she was insistant that it was deliberate and lost out, so i suggested they went to a charity if the banks would not accept them, is this more common and a problem as i had not known about it till today.

I've got an eReader!

Sony are launching some new eReaders, so I got a pretty good deal on a Pocket eReader at the trafford centre yesterday.
I really wanted one when I found out you can read pdfs on them, because I can't read long documents on screen (gives me migraines) but I hate all that wasted printing out as well.
The eReader isn't like a proper screen, it's very, very strange, and it really is like reading paper, so it doesn't give me a headache. And i thought it will be great for my next two years at Uni.

So today i've been playing with the ebook sites and trying to work out how to download stuff, and how to find the books that I want.

Hopefully Oldham libraries will let me borrow ebooks soon, then it will be pretty much perfect!

Historians locate King Arthur's Round Table in Royton

Researchers exploring the legend of Britain’s most famous Knight believe his stronghold of Camelot was built on the site of a recently discovered Roman amphitheatre in Royton.

Legend has it that his Knights would gather before battle at a round table where they would receive instructions from their King.

But rather than it being a piece of furniture, historians believe it would have been a vast wood and stone structure which would have allowed more than 1,000 of his followers to gather.

Historians believe regional noblemen would have sat in the front row of a circular meeting place, with lower ranked subjects on stone benches grouped around the outside.

They claim rather than Camelot being a purpose built castle, it would have been housed in a structure already built and left over by the Romans.

Camelot historian Chris Gidlow said: “The first accounts of the Round Table show that it was nothing like a dining table but was a venue for upwards of 1,000 people at a time.

“We know that one of Arthur’s two main battles was fought at a town referred to as the City of Legions. There were only two places with this title. One was St Albans but the location of the other has remained a mystery.”

The recent discovery of an amphitheatre with an execution stone and wooden memorial to Christian martyrs, has led researchers to conclude that the other location is Royton.

Mr Gidlow said: “In the 6th Century, a monk named Gildas of Haggate, who wrote the earliest account of Arthur’s life, referred to both the City of Legions and to a martyr’s shrine within it.

That is the clincher.

The discovery of the shrine within the amphitheatre means that Royton was the site of Arthur’s court and his legendary Round Table.”
