How to Create a Forum Avatar

An avatar is the image that goes next to all of your posts on this forum. Avatars can be up to 100 pixels wide by 100 pixels high and can be no more than 10kb in size. Animated GIFs are not allowed, sorry. To choose an image start by using google image search to find a photo you like. Click to view it at full size, then right-click in the middle of the image and choose to “save image as” (or similar) the image to your computer. Then follow the instructions below…

The quick & dirty method:

  • Click “browse” and then navigate to a photo on your computer and double-click it.
  • Use the zoom options to make sure your image is no bigger than 100px in height or width.
  • Use the arrows to select a specific area of the image (optional)
  • Click the circle, orange button labelled “resize your image”
  • You will then see the smaller image that has been created for you. Right-click in the middle of it and choose “save image as” (or similar) to save it to your computer (remember where you save it to. The Desktop is recommended)
  • Click “Profile” at the top of this forum. Then click “Personality” and then “upload” or “change” avatar.
  • Press your F5 key to refresh the page and you should then see your new avatar

The software method:

  • Download irfanview from http://www.irfanview.com (it's a nice free image editor for windows)
  • Install it, open it, then use it to crop, resize any images from your computer.
  • Make sure you export (or save) as a jpeg with enough compression to get it below 10kb.
  • Keep fiddling around until it does what you want it to do.
  • Works on windows machines only
