New life for Royton Assembly Hall
New life will be breathed into the Royton Assembly Hall after it is sold for redevelopment as a function suite and community theatre. The Council has agreed to sell the loss-making venue to Manchester based Whispers Developments. The building was costing local tax-payers £135,000 a year, equivalent to a loss of £3,500 a booking. But now a new era beckons with the promise of fantastic new facilities at the centre of the community. Council Leader Richard Knowles said officers had grilled the company vigorously over its plans for the Assembly Hall. “This is good news. What we have got here is the prospect of a much better facility, superior to what it was even when it was built. “It will also be much better used, and not running at a loss to Council taxpayers,” he added. Whispers will pay £215,000 for the hall, with a commitment to spend a further £380,000 on refurbishing the inside and the outside of the building. The bid was the highest offer received for the hall, and councillors were impressed with the plans to invest heavily to remarket the venue at the heart of Royton. The sale is expected to be finalised during January. Whispers Developments has previously worked on projects in Manchester city centre, Monton, Worsley, Salford, Macclesfield and Leeds.
